Each year the Clayton Fire Company presents a $1,000 scholarship to a firefighter or the child of a Clayton Fire Company member. This year’s winner is Morgan Burnett, the daughter of Clayton Firefighter Lt. Jonathan Burnett. Morgan a senior at Smyrna High has been accepted into the nursing program at Del Tech Terry Campus. The scholarship was named in honor of Linda Lightcap who died suddenly several years ago. Linda was a member of the Clayton Ladies Aux, her husband Robert is a past president of the company and her son Robert J. Lightcap is a past chief of the fire company.
During the April Company Meeting President Robert Faulkner and Chief Wes Davis named Firefighter Dakota Correll as Member of the Month for March. During the month of March Dakota attended the following; 10 out of 21 alarms, 2 Misc. Events, 2 In Service Drills and the company meeting for a total of 18 points for the month. The company is welcoming its newest little member to the Clayton Fire Company family with the birth of Easton Thomas Lucas. Easton is the 1st son of Firefighter Jake Lucas and his girlfriend Samantha Cahall. Easton was born on Wednesday April 12 at 1:10pm and weighted in a 9 pounds 6 ounces and was 21 and 3/4″ inches long. Easton is also the grandson of Life Member Michael Lucas. The officers and members of the company would like to welcome Easton to the family and congratulate Jake and Samantha.
Once again the company will be taking part in the annual I Love Smyrna School District Day to be held tomorrow Saturday February 25th from 8am until 4pm at the Smyrna High School 500 Duck Creek Parkway. Our booth is already set up and ready to visit with members of the public. This is a great opportunity for us to get out and meet the public who supports us, answer questions and show them some of the things we offer. The officers and members of the Clayton Fire Company are mourning the passing of Life Member Austin Carey. Mr. Carey passed away Sunday February 12, 2017 he was 95 years old. Mr. Carey was employed by the U.S. Civil Service at Dover Air Force Base for 19 years, and retired in 1984. He was also self-employed as a wallpaper hanger and painter for many years. He was a member and Past Commander of VFW Post 8801, Clayton, and a member of American Legion Post 14, Smyrna. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Hollett Carey, and a longtime companion, Virginia D. Cubbage. He is survived by a son, William A. Carey, of Smyrna; a brother, Carlton R. Carey, of Newark; a sister, Ruth M. Hollett, of Newark; and several nieces…
Friday evening with freezing temperatures about 15 members of the company attended the memorial service for fallen Deportment of Corrections Officer Sgt. Steven Floyd who was killed during a prison uprising this past week. The members of the company joined several hundred people from the community include other police, fire and emergency medical groups. The event was hosted by the friends of Sgt. The membership of the Clayton Fire Company is joining all of the emergency services in the State of Delaware in mourning the LODD of Delaware Correctional Officer Sgt. Steven Floyd. Sgt Floyd was a 16 year member of the Delaware Correctional Services. He was working at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center near Smyrna when prisoners took him and several other employees hostage. A memorial service is scheduled for Friday evening at 6pm at the George W. Wright Municipal Park on N. Main St. The company asks that you please keep Officer Floyd and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
The company is joining the Ladies Auxiliary in Mourning the passing of Life Member Nancy Ruth Lamon. Mrs. Lamon passed away on January 25, 2017 surrounded by her family. Mrs. Lamon was an active member with the auxiliary for many years. She was the wife of fire company Life Member Walter Lamon. She had 2 son's a daughter, daughter in laws, 2 sisters, 11 grand children, 21 great grand children and one great great grand child. A memorial service was help on Sunday January 29th at the Ewell St. Paul Church in Clayton. The company sends if sympathy to the Lamon's family.
The Officers and Members of the Clayton Fire Company are wishing a speedy recovery to Citizens Hose Company President Brooks Keen. President Keen was involved in a serious automobile accident on Friday in the Townsend area and was airlifted to CER. President Keen was admitted to CER and is undergoing treatment for his injuries. We ask that everyone please keep President Keen in your thoughts and prayers while he recoveries and we look forward to seeing him around the station and at scenes in the future.
